The Jeep Wagoneer was introduced in 1963 and is considered one of Jeep's earliest SUVs. It was built on a Jeep Gladiator pickup-truck chassis, making it more of a truck than an SUV, but its luxurious interior and powerful engines placed it in the SUV territory.
The Wagoneer was the biggest, heaviest, most powerful, and most expensive 4x4 vehicle in the world at the time of its launch. It was built for three decades until 1991, when production stopped.
In 2021, Jeep reintroduced the Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer nameplates to compete with big, luxurious SUVs offered by competitors like Cadillac Escalade and Lincoln Navigator. The new models were built on entirely new platforms with independent air suspension in four corners.
