Modern rain sensor systems can also control auxiliary functions such as closing openings or activating lighting. The light and rain sensors are no longer bonded to the windshield. Instead, they are secured using a retaining bracket or attached directly to the base of the rearview mirror. A cushion crafted from a specialized silicone gel (a gel pad) establishes the optical connection between the sensor unit and the glass surface.

These advancements in rain sensor technology have greatly enhanced driving safety and convenience, eliminating the need for manual intervention in turning on/off the windshield wipers.

Types of Rain Sensors

When it comes to rain sensors, there are two main types that you should be familiar with: the infrared sensor and the ultrasonic sensor.

Each car manufacturer designs the rain sensor slightly differently, so not all sensors necessarily look the same.

The infrared sensor uses two diodes, one transmitting an infrared ray and the other receiving it in a 45-degree angle of the windshield. In dry weather, the infrared beam is diffused in the windshield glass and reflected by the walls to the receiving diode.

However, in rainy weather, drops of water deflect and absorb the infrared beam, triggering the wiping function. The infrared sensor is also light-sensitive and enables an automatic lighting function.

On the other hand, the ultrasonic sensor uses ultrasound technology and operates on a similar principle to the infrared sensor. However, it isn’t light-sensitive and doesn’t enable an automatic lighting function.
