Acoustic glass is a type of automotive glass that is designed to reduce noise levels inside the vehicle. It typically consists of two layers of glass, with an acoustic vinyl layer in between.

4 People driving inside the car with acoustic glass, they can easily talk because car's interior is quiet.

When you’re driving, there are a lot of different sounds competing for your attention. You have the sound of the engine, the wind noise around the vehicle, the road noise, and any passengers that might be with you. All of these sounds can be pretty distracting, making it difficult to focus on the task at hand.

How Does Acoustic Auto Glass Works?

Acoustic glass is a type of automotive glass that is designed to reduce noise levels inside the vehicle. It typically consists of two layers of glass, with an acoustic vinyl layer in between. This layer helps to absorb and deflect sound waves (soundproofing), making it much quieter inside the car.

Acoustic glass is often used in luxury and modern vehicles, where customers expect a higher level of comfort and refinement. However, it can also be found in some economy cars and SUVs.

The Benefits of Acoustic Glass in a Car

There are 3 main benefits of acoustic glass:

  1. The acoustic glass absorbs noise before it enters the vehicle interior. As a result, you’ll enjoy a quieter vehicle interior and be able to focus more on the road.

  2. This glass can add an extra layer of security to your car. Acoustic glass is a type of auto glass that has been strengthened with a PVB film. This makes the glass more difficult to break, which can improve vehicle safety. In the event of an accident, the glass is less likely to shatter and cause injury.

  3. This type of glass can also help to block out a majority of ultraviolet rays. This is significant because it not only helps protect passengers from excessive UV exposure but also helps preserve the interior of the car. When UV rays enter the vehicle, they can cause the dash and seats to fade in color. However, by blocking out these harmful rays, acoustic windshields help keep cars looking new for longer.

The Different Types of Acoustic Auto Glass Available

There are two main types of acoustic auto glass available for 2 different purposes: tempered and laminated glass.

Acoustic windshields (laminated safety glass)

Acoustic windshield glass is simply a regular 3 layers windshield with an extra layer of acoustic film in between.

Structure of regular windshield: Glass – PVB Film – Glass

As you can see by the structure, one extra advantage of acoustic windshields is that they are more secure. The glass is harder to break due to an extra layer.

Acoustic tempered glass

This type of glass can replace regular car side and rear windows that are made from standard single-panel tempered glass.

Instead of only one monolith layer of tempered glass, acoustic auto glass is made from 2 thinner glass layers with the same acoustic interlayer in between. Principle is absolutely the same as in acoustic windshield, just the type of glass itself is different.

Because of the layered structure, acoustic rear and side windows are more substantial and breakage resistant than regular auto glass. That adds an extra layer of security to your vehicle.

Does Acoustic Glass Provide the Same Safety as a Regular Auto Glass?

Side windows in cars are usually made of tempered glass for several reasons. In the event that a vehicle overturned into the water, the tempered glass would shatter immediately and provide an escape route for the occupants.

The tiny shards of broken glass from a tempered window are also less likely to cause serious injury than the large pieces of glass that would result from a non-tempered window. As a result, tempered glass is often used in side windows to provide safety for car occupants in the event of an accident.

So there is the question, will the acoustic side window in a car provide the same features as a regular window? Logically, the layer of plastic film in between will prevent the glass from breaking into small pieces.

Of course, the plastic layer gives extra strength to the overall glass structure, but if a car overturns into the water, you’ll still be able to break through the glass to escape the car, as the plastic layer itself is not very strong, and primarily provides structural support and noise reduction properties to the window.

So you don’t need to worry. The acoustic glass will provide good safety in all scenarios 🙂

Can You Install Acoustic Glass on Your Car?

Unfortunately, auto glass manufacturers don’t produce acoustic glass for all vehicles out there. As we mentioned before, this glass can mostly be found on high-end vehicles, so if you have a cheap car, there is a big chance that simply nobody makes that type of glass for your model.

The best way to find out if you’re able to get one that fits your car – ask an auto glass shop if they can get acoustic glass for your specific model. They can usually check their supplier catalog and see available options.
