The General Motors Corporation produced the Pontiac Grand Prix from 1962 to 2008. The Grand Prix was introduced as a performance-oriented option package for the Pontiac Catalina 2+2, with either a turbocharged 3.8 L Download V6 or a 5.7 L Chevrolet V8. The first generation of the Grand Prix (1962-1967) was based on the full-sized Pontiac platform and was positioned as a personal luxury car.
The second generation (1968-1972) was built on the intermediate GM A platform and became one of the most successful cars in NASCAR history, winning the Daytona 500 three times.
The third generation (1973-1977) was based on the GM G platform and returned to its luxury roots. The fourth generation (1978-1987) saw the Grand Prix move to the front-wheel drive GM H platform, where it would remain for the rest of its production run.
The fifth and final generation (1988-2008) saw the further refinement of the car's luxury trappings, but sales declined in the early 2000s, and production ended in 2008.
Over its 46-year production run, 1,567,646 Pontiac Grand Prix were produced, making it one of the most sold models for the car manufacturer.
